The victims of mass killings were remembered during a special Genocide Memorial Day service. Representatives of all faiths in Bolton gathered for the event in Victoria Square on Sunday 22nd June, which coincided with the end of refugee week. It was organised by the Interfaith Council in Bolton to remember past and present victims of genocide. Tony McNeile, secretary of the Bolton Interfaith Council said: “We have so many different communities from around the world in Bolton and many of them have victims in their own community who have suffered from the effects of genocide and war. This is a way for the town to show that we do care about this”.Norman Crane from the Bolton Jewish community, Priti Merai from the Hindu community, Yaseer Ahmed from the Bolton Council of Mosques, the Rev Canon Dr Chris Bracegirdle, and Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Anthony Connell, all made speeches during the event. Youngsters from the Starting Point school in Selkirk Road, Sharples, burst white balloons to signify a hope for peace. The school takes in many refugees when they first arrive in Bolton. Cllr Connell said “Bolton is a multi-cultural town and I hope there comes a time when the word genocide no longer exists”. Article taken from the Bolton Evening News, dated Monday 23rd June |
