During a busy period in the month of Ramadan, at Mosques in Great Lever, and Zakariya Mosque in Peace Street, more than a hundred men had access to the PCT Health Trainers, and local pharmacists who were on hand to offer health information, advice and health checks focusing on diabetes, and heart disease awareness. The events were a resounding success, and more than ten men were found to have high blood pressure and were referred on for treatment. The Project was a collaboration by Great Lever Health Development Specialist Shahan Lais, local Community members, Bolton Council of Mosques, and health professionals from the area. Shahan said: The pilot was designed to raise awareness of diabetes, coronary heart disease, as well as life style issues, such as healthy eating, smoking, all by adopting a community development approach, hence holding the events in the heart of the community, in this case local mosques. We also had the Five a Day Food Access team to offer healthy eating advice, and fruit & vegetable goodie packs. We are very pleased, not just that over a hundred men have had health checks, but also that partnerships that have been created with local communities and health professionals.
Future plans include a health forum for residents of Great Lever, if you are interested and would like to be involved please contact Shahan Lais on : 01204 338735 |
